The Toyota Effect – Rebuilding After Hurricane Katrina

We just passed the 10 year anniversary of Katrina. Many families have settled back into life as they knew it and others are still rebuilding. Many of us were effected by those rising waters 10 years ago; my husband worked at the Ritz Carlton in the French Quarter with the Jeremy Davenport band. The band moved to St. Louis for 6 months to maintain an income while the Ritz was being rebuilt.

The Toyota Effect

The rebuild in New Orleans was a bit chaotic after Katrina; so many wanting to help out by donating clothes, many household items like furnite, even some Melbourne plantation window shutters. However, with no real direction or an efficient game plan, best efforts were not panning out. This is where Toyota stepped in to help a local non-profit, The St. Bernard Project, create more efficient ways to do their day-to-day work, building homes.

The Toyota Effect – Rebuilding After Hurricane Katrina

Toyota is paying it forward by sharing its unique and effective process philosophy with other manufacturers, nonprofits and community organizations.
By implementing the Toyota production system (TPS) – an integrated social-technical system, The St. Bernard Project went from building a house in 116 days to building a house in 61 days, reducing construction time almost by half… making a lasting difference in the lives of those receiving the gift of a home. Toyota shares their process because they know that when good ideas are shared, great things can happen.

The Toyota Effect

This is just one of the examples of how Toyota is encouraging organizations to have a purpose that is more far-reaching and important than making money. It’s about having a lasting and positive impact on the people in our communities, society and the environment. It’s about doing good.

As moms, we know how a well thought out plan makes for a more efficient day. Even through this online community, we strive to make your lives easier by offering resources, tips, guidance and support on the many challenging aspects of your day. Hey, our Kids Eat Free guide is an important resource on those busy nights when cooking isn’t going to happen but you don’t want to break the bank. We’ve brought local experts in to answer questions about pediatric health.  At Baton Rouge Moms we’ve also been driven with a desire to give back,  it’s one of our core values. Baton Rouge Moms was created with the hope that we, moms, could find ways to collectively give back to the place we call home. Each week we highlight inspirational ideas for doing good and ways to give back to the community through our Baton Rouge Gives Back series. Goodness spurs goodness, goodness causes a ripple effect of generosity through our community.

It’s inspiring to think that a large organization like Toyota is passing on the good by sharing their know-how with non-profits, organizations and even fellow manufactures. With Toyota’s help, NOLA continues to improve and residents are coming home!

Toyota partnered with filmmakers to create a series of short films to document some of the most impactful projects Toyota has embarked on in recent years. Called The Toyota Effect, the series highlights the company’s mission through mini-documentary style films.
