Atomic Burger – Clean Eats in Baton Rouge

June 5, 2019 by Rochelle Calhoun

So my husband’s birthday was on Saturday, but because he’s awesome, we began the celebration on Thursday night. We maintain strictly, clean eating habits, but his birthday was a good opportunity to take a little break, while still allowing him to enjoy his favorite activity, eating. After eating at his favorite local breakfast hangout, I decided to take him to Atomic Burger for lunch. It’s a new fast-casual restaurant located on Burbank and Lee. They’ve been open for a few weeks and we’d heard rave reviews about them so we were excited.

Atomic Burger

So let’s talk about why this place is a big deal for us. We make every effort to avoid chemical processing in every area of our lives, especially our food. Sure there are lots of restaurants where you can get a hamburger and fries, but we value eateries that take pride in the sourcing and preparation of their menu items. Atomic Burger seems to do just that. Their beef is ground fresh in house, they slice their own potatoes, and their produce is freshly prepared. In addition, they have a variety of options for those with dietary restrictions, and that was the cherry on top.

Atomic Burger

The design of the restaurant has a very retro, yet modern style to it, kind of like the In-and-Out Burger restaurants back home in LA. There were a few guests in line, but we didn’t mind the wait because we could smell the awesomeness as soon as we walked in the door. What really impressed us was the Gluten Free (Products made without wheat, spelt, kamut, farro, durum, bulgar, semolina, barley, rye, and triticale) and Keto Friendly (low-carb/high fat) Cauliflower bun and lettuce wrap options. Our family has very strict dietary guidelines due to my wheat allergy and our son’s eczema that’s triggered by wheat, dairy, and eggs. There aren’t many places where we can all enjoy a full meal without too many substitutions, so we appreciate their consideration of those with alternative dietary needs.

The Cauliflower Bun and Keto options are a nice touch for those with dietary restrictions. They also offer veggie and turkey burgers.

Atomic BurgerWe both ordered the Atomic Burger with grilled onions and Cauliflower bun, and a side of fries to share. Although they do have shakes, our lactose intolerance just couldn’t handle the dairy. However, their shakes aren’t just the usual ice cream in a cup type shakes. They’re actually chilled to order using liquid nitrogen (yep, you read that correctly). I promise you I stood there in a daze, fascinated by the process! One day, I may live on the wild side and try one. But I digress…

By the time we ordered, picked up a few condiments from the bar, and found a table on the enclosed patio, our food was ready. Now before I tell you about the burger, let’s discuss this condiment bar. The hubs and I are both suckers for condiments. (Like seriously! Our fridge contains an ungodly amount of them) So you can just imagine the joy we felt in our hearts when we saw toppings like Roasted Garlic Aioli (our fave), Truffle Mayo, and Sriracha Mayo! We were in condiment heaven! Okay, so back to the burger. The Cauliflower bun was a pleasant alternative to the typical lettuce wrap. It had the texture of a fried egg and didn’t fall apart or get all messy like a lettuce wrap either. I really don’t like the taste of cauliflower, but I honestly couldn’t even tell it was the main ingredient.

Dip the fry! Trust me! The Garlic Aioli is magical!
Atomic Burger

The patties had that signature beefiness that you want on a burger, and it honestly reminded me of In-and-Out burger as well. Especially with the grilled onions. The fries, (drool) were homemade. No one had to tell me they were freshly sliced because I could tell! They had a soft, fleshy potato center and a slight crisp on the outside. Perfect! You just can’t get that flavor or texture from frozen fries. And I must say, the Garlic Aioli made a perfect dip.

Rochelle CalhounAfter finishing the burger, although I was full, I wasn’t “loosen my pants” stuffed, and that was a good thing. The cauliflower bun gave me the satisfaction of a “real” burger without an actual wheat derived bun. I can dig it! While eating burgers and fries are not our typical household meal, it’s great to have options available where we can enjoy a burger made with fresh ingredients instead of all of the heavily processed, chemically altered ones.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and our food. So much so, that we’re adding it to our list of places to go in Baton Rouge. Have you tried Atomic Burger yet? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook. Until next time…

November 28, 2015 by Tiany Davis

With a new year quickly approaching, it’s time to make sure that 2016 will be a year of intentional living, a year to not only take care of family, home and work…  but yourself.  When would be a better time to plan and organize for a new year than when it’s about to begin!? Two Baton Rouge moms have done all the work for us, they created a complete planner that allows moms to live a full and organized life, a planner that will truly help us keep track of every aspect of our lives in a simple, creative and intimate way… A Faithful Mom Day Planner!

A Faithful Mom Planner

A Faithful Mom Planner

A Faithful Mom Planner is very well made, sturdy and small enough to fit in a purse, they are very well detailed and best of all LOCAL! They are even printed right here in Baton Rouge! Organize your days, monthly activities, menu planning, family time, individual family member’s needs, home keeping, service, gifts, special dates and holidays… with inspiration and encouraging faith reminders throughout! I’m a bit of  planner enthusiast, I love paper planners, I’m a pen and paper kind of girl. I also love to decorate my planners and personalize them to make them not only functional but pretty. The problem is that I really don’t have time to decorate and fiddle with washi tape and stickers but with A Faithful Mom Planner, they are decorated so beautifully, you don’t need to decorate unless you just enjoy doing so.

What pages are included in the planner:
-weekly and monthly planning pages
-personal and family goals and highlight pages

Moms’ Night Out movie- Jodi’s Review

May 10, 2014 by Jodi Stewart

I’m a mom, and I’m a blogger, but I’m not a Mommy Blogger. Oh, I have a Mommy Blog. It’s in my imagination. I write my posts in the shower. They’re all rants, and they’re all directed at the writers of those creepy, judgy things shared on Facebook. You know, the “I was spying on you in *insert name of public place where you were a) taking a break or b) dealing with a normal toddler*, you were parenting wrong, you’ve ruined your children, you’re a failure” type posts.

My Imaginary Mommy Blog is not edifying. It gets pretty angry. I personally have no idea how to defeat this weird, dark, very personal attack on moms that is seeping into our culture other than to turn around and be as cruel and critical as the authors of these things. So I keep my Mommy Blog in my imagination and I blog about food instead.I remember how beautiful my 80s prom dress was and how fast time flies.

Thankfully, someone else has noticed this twist towards bringing moms down, and they figured out exactly what to do about it. They made a movie.

Moms Night Out the Movie

{A little sidebar here, when I first heard about Moms’ Night Out, I decided I didn’t want to see it. I interpreted the description like this: “A stressed out mom goes out for the night with her friends and leaves her helpless kids with her moron husband, hilarity ensues.” Not something I could relate to at all. My husband is not a moron. He’s an engineer and a pastor and an extremely competent father. I’m not stressed out. (Okay, I’m stressed out, but I had premie colicky twins so my stress bar is pretty high), and frankly, a movie about moms leaving the house just sounded lame. But I love Baton Rouge Moms and really want to support them in every event they put on and I really wanted an excuse to actually have a moms night out, and there was popcorn, so I saw the movie. If you’re hesitant about seeing a “movie about moms” I feel ya. Sidebar over.}

Moms’ Night Out was seriously one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in ages, is almost as great as the wolf children full movie. Funny in the just plain funny way and absolutely funny in the “it’s funny because it’s true” way. This is a movie you need to see with other moms, preferably in a theater full of other moms so you don’t drive everyone else crazy. Our theater was just other moms and I could hear people whispering things during the movie, “oh my goodness, that reminds me of when so and so…” and we were all laughing because we’d all come out of our room at some point to “breakfast” made by our preschoolers or some other disaster. I laughed so hard I was choking. I’m still cracking up over it today. (Me: laughing. Husband: what’s so funny? Me: laughing and choking he killed mamma!! Husband: raised eyebrow)

Moms Night Out Movie Review

But even better was how this movie affirmed moms. Better than being a candle in this dark and judgmental world, Moms’ Night Out is a blowtorch. It blasts the message, you are NOT a failure. Your house is a wreck, you spent half an hour on your Iphone at the park, yes, you even bought that screaming preschooler the $20 stuffed animal to shut her up (okay, that last one was all me, the other ones too, but the last one is probably somebody’s next Facebook post so I’m coming clean now) but you are the MOST important person in the world, at least to one person.

And your importance doesn’t end when your kids are teens. Moms of teens (and teen moms!) will get something out of this too.

No guilt, no judgment, no “cherish them now they grow up so fast,” just a recognition that this mom thing can be brutal and exhausting. And this mom thing is important.

You’re important.

Moms Night Out Movie Review

The characters in Moms Night Out are real and believable, the moms aren’t crazy and the dads aren’t morons, and no matter what stage of parenting you’re at or position you’re in, you’ll find you relate to someone. This movie will tug at your heart, make you see your life and your kids (even your teens) with fresh eyes and will make you appreciate the real, lasting difference you are making. You will cry, just a little bit.

Please take a mom to see this movie. If you are a mom, see this movie. Let’s use it to tear down this darkness and start building up ourselves and each other.
